In today’s increasingly digital world, access to technology is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2023 we asked Engineering Manager Biljana Stevanovic, and Estimator Li Liu, what this year’s theme “Cracking the Code: Innovation for a gender equal future’” means to them and how we can encourage young girls and women to take up careers in STEM. We often hear about the challenges of increasing the representation of women in engineering, but Biljana’s positive experience when starting her career in Serbia is one that can be replicated here in Australia. It all starts with education. “The education system is quite different to Australia,” Biljana explained. “I went to a mathematics high school where maths and science were the main subjects and it was a 50-50 ratio of boys to girls…girls were encouraged just as much as the boys were to take up these subjects.” Li had a similar experience during her time as a student in China. “There was never a question of whether STEM was for boys or for girls. Just as many girls were studying engineering as there were studying fashion or nursing.” “As an estimator working in Australia over the past […]

Managing excessive energy use outside rental arrangements across multiple tenancies is one of the many challenges faced by facility managers of large shopping centres. Precise Air’s Building Performance Optimisation (BPO) team were engaged by one of Queensland’s busiest large-format shopping centres to analyse and implement a solution that would provide the FM team with data that could be used to justify accurate energy cost apportioning across tenancies. As this was a retrofit project, the client required a solution that could pull data from the existing solution to avoid replacing the entire system, with a return on investment of less than one year. Accurate and up-to-date data is vital for individualised billing Our client’s existing reporting tool had a number of problems common to older, standalone systems: Inadequate utility usage insights: The Centre’s standard EMS (energy management system) didn’t offer the granular data in the format required to be able to accurately charge each tenancy. It was unable to apportion and visually present electrical data. Existing locally hosted solution: The existing reporting tool was expensive to maintain and was hosted locally on unreliable servers. A solution that simplifies energy cost apportioning The BPO team analysed the current reporting system against their […]

In the spirit of this year’s National Safe Work Month our Emergency Management Team in Brisbane took time out to consider what it means to be safe from physical and psychological harm in the workplace. The session kicked off with a film from WorkSafe, reinforcing the importance of being proactive in preparing for a workplace emergency and the impact that a traumatic event can have on workers and first responders. The Team shared their experiences about work-safe ready equipment and workplaces then got down to business with Fire Extinguisher training using the simple PASS Method. A big thank you to Michelle Feldman and the National HSEQ team for all of our National Work Safe Month activities! Optimising the circulation of fresh, clean air and managing occupancy movement throughout the indoor environment are two of the largest challenges facing facility managers in managing COVID safety in the workplace. As a leading provider of air conditioning, building optimisation and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) remediation, Precise Air Group has designed a three step solution to help you manage your facility during these difficult times.* Step 1 Increased ventilation There are a number of quick wins that will increase the circulation of clean air throughout your building: review air conditioning settings and monitor Co2 levels via your BMS review air flow and fresh air check exhaust fans in restrooms and facilities are operating continuously when occupied check portable air purifiers and that personal fans are not directly blowing air from one person to another. Step 2 – Improve Indoor Air Quality Indoor air quality is impacted by microbial growth including bacteria, mould, fungi and viruses. Cleaning and filtration at the source of your circulating air is key to reducing transmission the air conditioning systems. IAQ can be improved at the source by: chemical coil cleaning improving filtration by using filters with a high MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values) rating. We […]

Congratulations to the team at 2 Parramatta Square, Parramatta on raising the NABERS Energy and Water ratings again with zero capex. “2 Parramatta Square is a great example of what we can achieve when the HVAC, BMS and FM specialists are aligned in their objectives,” said Wissam Salama, Precise Air’s General Manager Building Performance Optimisation. Since 2014 Precise Air Group’s Building Performance Optimisation team has worked closely with the BGIS FM team to develop a strategy to improve the performance of the building without the need for major capex spend. In 2014 the BPO team undertook a programme of fine tuning, implementing a range of initiatives including seasonal deadbands and voting techniques at the terminal level, demand control and variable set points at the plants level, closely tuning thermal plants staging with demand control and variable set points reset, and changes to the chiller strategies. “This year, our NABERS targets were 5.5 stars for Base Building Energy and 4 stars for Water with zero capex spend,” explained Wissam. “We achieved these by applying our proactive optimisation model and using our human learning strategies to achieve optimal results,” explained Wissam. Precise Air is now offering NABERS assessments for Shopping Centres. “NABERS ratings for Shopping Centres allows facility managers and owners to understand how they are operating in comparison to shopping centres that are similar in size and function,” explained Joe Mazza, Director – National Business Development. “There are so many variables from one centre to the next, but the shopping centre assessment tool takes this into consideration, so that FMs and owners can set goals and define an energy and water programme that will help them to easily achieve their objectives,” Joe said. Precise Air’s General Manager – Building Performance Optimisation, Wissam Salama is accredited to provide these assessments. “NABERS ratings are used to identify areas for building improvements and to promote the environmental credentials of the buildings,” explained Wissam. “This helps our client attract premium tenants and can lead to an increase in property value.” If you would like more information on obtaining a NABERS assessment of your shopping centre, please contact Wissam Salama on 1300 728 250.
