How Precise Air Builds Safety Culture Through Trust and Engagement
Since Australia’s harmonised Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws came into effect in 2012, workplace safety has largely been shaped by compliance, incident metrics, reporting, and targets like “zero harm.” While these remain essential, Precise Air recognises that metrics alone can create unintended barriers, including hesitancy to report concerns and an "us versus them" dynamic between workers and management. Traditional lagging indicators, which measure past incidents, look backwards rather than addressing risk proactively.
We are evolving that approach at the Precise Air group of companies. Compliance is still essential but it’s no longer the whole story. “Our focus is re-emphasising the relationship with our workforce, creating an environment where people feel valued, supported, and part of the solution,” Richard Bagnato, Precise Air's General Manager HSEQ explains. “It’s about getting in front of issues, having conversations, understanding the work, and supporting people before something goes wrong.”
Practical tools: MMRs and Toolbox Meetings
You can see this in action through initiatives like our Minimum Monthly Requirements (MMRs) and Toolbox Meetings. These aren’t just about ticking boxes, they’re about bringing people together, encouraging open conversations, and learning from each other. They are a chance for people to connect and talk about what’s really happening day to day. “We encourage employees to raise concerns, share ideas, and help develop solutions because,” as Richard says, “the people doing the work are best placed to understand the risks.”
The PRECISE Principles
At its heart, it’s about enabling an environment built on trust. It’s embedded in the PRECISE Principles, which recognise employees as Precise Air's most valuable asset. When people are genuinely involved, they’re more engaged, take greater ownership, and contribute to better outcomes.
Precise isn’t stepping away from compliance. We are building on it. Our goal is a stronger safety culture, driven by trust, engagement, and shared responsibility.
